Cycling for Obesity and Diabetes Prevention - World Diabetes and anti Obesity month-2011

Dr. Srikanth’s Diabetes Specialities Centre [DSDSC] celebrated the World Diabetes and anti Obesity month on Monday the 28th November, 2011 by holding a bicycle rally in the City.

The Cycling for Obesity and Diabetes Prevention’ rally was organized by DSDSC in association with the Active Bicyclers Association. The rally was flagged off from Municipal Commissioners bungalow on the Mahatma Gandhi road by the NCC Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel V. Ravi Kumar. The participants pedaled up to Karnati Ramohan Rao School via Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium, Sikhamani Centre, Moghalrajapuram, Sunnambhatila centre, Ramesh Cardiology Centre, Veterinary Colony, NTR Colony, Bharati Nagar, Gurunanak Nagar, and Siddhartha College.

DSDSC in charge and rally organizer Mr. Brahmaji Kanakamedala stated that the objective behind holding the bicycle rally was the need of the hour. Such activities promote fitness among people to fight diseases such as diabetes, blood pressure, and decrease traffic congestion on the roads. As many as 40 students from the Karnati Ramohan Rao Muncipal Corporation School took part in the cycle rally and road show, conducted as part of the campaign to create awareness on Obesity and Diabetes.

NCC Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel V. Ravi Kumar said that "Cycling is a ride for any individual or team who wants to enjoy a great day of cycling and, at the same time, help stop this deadly disease. I know how important it is to stay healthy and cycling is one way to do that. What better way to spend a day than cycling with your friends, “he said.

"Around 12-14 per cent of the population in the city is suffering from diabetes said Dr. M. Srikanth chief Diabetologist, DSDSC and added that modification in lifestyle was the best way to fight it. Cycling 7 km a day and a healthy diet would keep diseases away. A yearly check-up to detect blood sugar and cholesterol levels, blood pressure and body weight is important, "That was why we decided to focus on creating awareness among the public about this", he said.
