Diabetes and Smoking - Another Reason to Quit

As if there are not enough reasons to quit smoking, breaking the habit is even more important if you have diabetes or want to avoid getting it. If you smoke and think you are otherwise in good health, think again. Smoking 16 to 25 cigarettes a day increases your risk for Type 2 diabetes to three times that of a non-smoker. The more risk factors a person has, the greater the chances are of developing diabetes. While smoking can increase your chances of getting diabetes, it can also make managing diabetes more difficult for those who already have it. Other complications of smoking on diabetes include retinopathy (eye disease), heart disease, stroke, vascular disease, kidney disease, nerve damage, foot problems, and many others. A person with some or all of the risk factors might never develop diabetes, but your chances increase as more risk factors are present. Certain risk factors like age, family history, and ethnicity cannot be altered, but a change in lifestyle that includes eating a modified diet, increasing physical activity, and quitting smoking might help reduce the risk.

Dr. M. Srikanth and Dr. M. Suneetha releases VLCC Osteoporosis book on World Anti Obesity Day

Dr. M. Srikanth together with Dr. M. Suneetha today released a VLCC Osteoporosis book on world anti obesity day. Speaking on the occasion Dr Srikanth said, there is a virtual epidemic of obesity sweeping the globe and in the context of India, what is most worrisome is a very high prevalence of central or abdominal obesity which has been found to be over 60 per cent in both men and women in Andhrapradesh. Dr. M. Suneetha said that abdominal obesity is an independent risk factor for diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. Even if a person is not apparently obese in general, the abdominal obesity in itself acts as a major risk factor, she added. Dr. Srikanth and Dr Suneetha appreciated the relentless efforts of VLCC in bringing public awareness about obesity and managing it effectively.

Serial Diabetes awareness and detection camps to mark World Diabetes day-2011

To bring the spotlight on the magnitude of the problem of diabetes that afflicts nearly four crore people across the country, Dr. Srikanth’s Diabetes Specialities Centre in association with regional Lions Clubs is organizing a month long “Serial Diabetes awareness and detection camps” in selected mandals of Krishna district beginning Tuesday the 1st of November 2011.

Centre in charge Mr. D.V.S. Prasad said that participants detected with diabetes at the camps would be provided free consultation, diabetes education, diet and exercise counseling. A comprehensive annual master health checkup will be provided at 50% the actual price to all the deserving camp attendees.

Dr. M. Srikanth chief Diabetologist, DSDSC said the economic cost of the disease is very high and it is essential that more funds are spent on tackling it. Since diabetics are also two to four times more prone to blindness, cardiovascular disease, renal failure, vascular and neurological complications, he said it should be noted with concern that in 2011 the disease is estimated to kill nearly 4 million people and so it is essential that steps are initiated to create greater public awareness. He appreciated the Lions Clubs & DSDSC initiative in this regard.

Dr. M. Suneetha Gynecologist exclusively for women with diabetes has said that diabetes management is not just about lowering the blood sugar level but also about how to keep future heart attack, kidney failure, paralysis and blindness at bay.

Dietician & Diabetes Educator A. Swetha stressed the need to modify lifestyles to prevent diabetes. “Simple Indian food is the need of the hour. Parents also have responsibility to see that their children don’t overeat, exercise properly and avoid junk food.”

“One should eat traditional food items like jawar, bajra, bananas and dry fruits like cashewnuts, raisins and almonds so that the insulin level gets decreased. People can even munch chana. However, Western fast food is affecting the health of not only urbanites for also rural folks who are eating chips and burgers.” She added.
